McLaughlin & Harvey has secured a contract worth more than £100m to build a new combat air research and manufacturing facility for Rolls-Royce at its existing Gipsy Patch site in Bristol. The award was confirmed on 21 July, with construction due to begin later this year.

The building will bring research, testing, manufacturing and assembly functions together under one roof to support development of future combat air technology, described by Rolls-Royce as a digitally connected facility rather than a conventional factory shed. McLaughlin & Harvey construction director Dougie McCusker pointed to the firm's existing relationship with Rolls-Royce, having already delivered two advanced manufacturing projects for the aerospace and defence manufacturer, as a factor in the award.

Why it matters for the market

Defence has been one of the quieter growth areas in UK construction while housebuilding and even some infrastructure sub-sectors have struggled through 2026. Government commitments to raise defence spending, combined with programmes like the UK's future combat air system, are translating into real building contracts rather than just budget announcements. A £100m-plus single facility for one manufacturer, on top of two previous jobs for the same client, points to a pipeline rather than a one-off: Rolls-Royce and its peers in the sector will need more of this kind of specialist facility as combat air and advanced manufacturing programmes ramp up over the rest of the decade.

These are also technically demanding builds. Combined research, testing and manufacturing facilities carry specialist mechanical, electrical and cleanroom-standard fit-out requirements that sit closer to life sciences or semiconductor construction than a standard industrial shed, which limits the pool of contractors able to compete and tends to reward firms, like McLaughlin & Harvey, that already hold client trust in the sector.

Roles on schemes like this skew towards project managers and senior QSs who can handle security-vetted supply chains and complex M&E packages, alongside mechanical and electrical engineers comfortable with cleanroom or controlled-environment specifications. Security clearance requirements mean lead times on hiring can be longer than usual, so building relevant experience and getting vetting-ready early is a genuine advantage over candidates who only start that process once a role is advertised.

Bristol and the wider South West, already home to a cluster of aerospace and defence manufacturing, looks set to be a regional beneficiary if this programme continues to expand. For QSs and project managers weighing up sectors for their next move, defence now sits alongside data centres and life sciences as one of the few areas of UK construction still adding complex, well-funded work while more mainstream sectors mark time.
