How to get into UK construction from wherever you are standing: what the industry is, how apprenticeships really work, what the courses give you, and why the first ten years decide the next thirty.
Construction is the business of turning a drawing into a place people use.
Somebody wants a thing to exist. A hospital trust wants a ward block. A council wants four hundred homes. A water company wants a treatment works that stops sewage going into a river. None of them want to run a building site, so they pay somebody else to take that risk off them. That single fact explains the shape of the entire industry.
The organisation that wants the building is the client. It appoints a main contractor to deliver it, and the contractor appoints subcontractors to do the specialist packages: groundworks, steel, brickwork, mechanical and electrical, lifts, roofing, fit out. Money flows down that chain. Risk flows up it. Almost every argument you will ever have in this industry is about where a risk sat when something went wrong.
Infrastructure is the same business at a different scale. Instead of a building it is a railway, a road, a reservoir, a power station, a grid connection. The contracts are longer, the programmes run for a decade or more, and the client is usually a government body or a regulated utility rather than a developer. Some people spend a whole career there and never build anything with a roof on it.
What both have in common is that the work is real. At the end of it there is a thing standing in the world, and you can drive your kids past it. Very few industries offer that, and the ones that do tend to be much harder to get into than this one.

Low Pay CommissionThat third number is the one to read twice. The industry is not short of work. It is short of people, and it has been for twenty years. That is the entire reason a sixteen year old with no qualifications and a decent attitude can walk into a career here that pays more than most graduate professions, and it is why every large contractor in the country runs a scheme trying to find you.
Construction is not one job. There are more than 170 of them, and the ones that pay best are mostly not the ones you have heard of. Broadly, people fall into one of five camps, and most careers start in one and drift towards another.
Quantity surveyors, estimators, buyers. You price the work before it starts, then you make sure the project earns what it was meant to earn. It is the discipline that produces the most directors, because you learn where the value is.
Site managers, project managers, general foremen. You sequence the work, run the trades, keep people safe and hand the building over. Long days, high pressure, and the most satisfying job on this list on the day it opens.
Civil and structural engineers, design managers, architects, building services engineers. You turn a requirement into something buildable, then defend it when the site asks why it cannot be done the easy way.
Bricklayers, joiners, groundworkers, electricians, plumbers, steel fixers. Skilled, in demand, and the route a very large number of site managers and business owners actually came through.
BIM and information managers, planners, health and safety, sustainability, bid managers. Newer, growing fast, and short of people who understand both the technology and the site.

Start the Early Careers PathwayThey are genuinely different roads and they genuinely arrive at the same place. Ten years in, nobody on a site has ever asked a good commercial manager which of these they took. Choose on how you learn and what you can afford, not on which one sounds most impressive at a family party.

You want to be working now, and you are not sure a full apprenticeship will take you yet.
Introduced in England in August 2025 and construction was one of the first three sectors to get one. It is a paid job with training attached, built to get you to the start line of a full apprenticeship rather than to a trade in its own right. Age 22 to 24 also qualifies if you have an EHC plan or have been in care.
You learn by doing, and you would rather be paid than sit in a classroom for two more years.
The classic route, and still the most common. Level 2 is broadly GCSE level, Level 3 is A level level. Trades sit here, and so do the technical entry roles: site technician, assistant buyer, plant. You work four days and study one, and by 19 you have three years of site under you while your friends are picking a university.
You want the technical grounding and a real placement before you commit to one discipline.
A T Level is worth three A levels and includes an industry placement of at least 45 days, which is the part that matters: it is a genuine audition. Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction is the one that leads to surveying, engineering and project management. Onsite Construction and Building Services Engineering lead to the trades and to M&E.
You want the degree and the career, and you would rather not buy the degree yourself.
The best value route in the industry and the one most people have never heard of. You are a full employee from day one, on a salary, with your fees paid, and you come out with an honours degree and five years of experience instead of a degree and none. Competition is fierce for a reason. Apply in the autumn for a September start.
You want the full student experience, or you are aiming at civil or structural engineering.
Still the standard route into engineering and design, and a perfectly good one into surveying and construction management. Two things decide how much your degree is worth: whether it is accredited by RICS, CIOB or ICE, and whether you did a placement year. Take the placement year. It is the single biggest predictor of a good first job.
You are already working, or you are coming into this later than 18.
Plenty of the best site managers in the country started as labourers or on the tools and never wrote a UCAS form. It is slower on paper and it asks more of you, because nobody is scheduling your development. It still ends in the same place, and the site knowledge you pick up on the way is the kind you cannot teach in a lecture theatre.
An apprenticeship is a job. That is the part people get wrong. You are not a student with a work placement, you are an employee with a contract, a salary, holiday and a manager, and part of your paid working week is set aside for study. At least twenty percent of your normal hours, by law.

England, and the pattern for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is similar with different names. Scotland has Foundation, Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships. Wales has Foundation, Apprenticeship, Higher and Degree. Northern Ireland runs ApprenticeshipsNI and Higher Level Apprenticeships.
The apprentice minimum wage is £8.00 an hour from April 2026. It applies if you are under 19, or if you are 19 and over and in the first year of your apprenticeship. After that first year you move onto the normal minimum wage for your age, which is £10.85 at 18 to 20 and £12.71 at 21 and over. Know that rule, because it is the single most common thing apprentices get underpaid on.
Those are floors, not going rates. Large contractors and consultancies routinely pay well above them, and a degree apprentice at a tier one contractor is on a proper starting salary with a car allowance in sight. Set against a graduate who finishes with tuition debt, an apprentice who finishes at 22 with an accredited degree, no debt and four years of experience is a long way ahead on any honest arithmetic.
Almost every further education college in the country runs construction. The two things worth knowing are that the T Level is now the serious full time option, worth three A levels and built with employers, and that it carries an industry placement of at least 45 days. Treat that placement as a long interview, because that is what it is. Three construction T Levels exist: Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction, which leads to surveying and engineering and project management; Onsite Construction, which leads to the trades; and Building Services Engineering, which leads to M&E.
Alongside them colleges run BTEC style courses and the classroom half of every apprenticeship in their area. If you are already working, that is the door: your employer sends you one day a week and pays for it.
Two questions decide how much a construction degree is worth, and neither of them is the name on the front of the prospectus.
Is it accredited? An RICS, CIOB or ICE accredited degree puts you straight onto the professional route at the other end. An unaccredited one means extra study later to get to the same place. Check the course page, and check it on the professional body's own site rather than taking the university's word for it.
Does it have a placement year? Take it. A year in industry is the single biggest predictor of walking into a good graduate job, because you arrive able to read a drawing, sit in a meeting and use the systems. Graduates without one spend their first year learning what the placement students learned for free.
What a week looks like: lectures and seminars in construction technology, measurement, contract law, economics, structures and project management, plus a lot of coursework built around real project scenarios. It is a practical degree taught by people who mostly did the job. Expect site visits, expect group work, and expect to be asked to defend a number in front of a room.

For civil and structural engineering it is a different table, with higher grade requirements and a longer road to chartership.
And if you would rather your employer paid for the degree, these are among the universities that deliver the built environment degree apprenticeship. Your employer picks the provider, so these are names to raise with them rather than places to apply to directly.
You already understand this if you have watched anything get built. The foundations take a quarter of the programme, cost a fortune, and produce nothing anyone can photograph. Then the frame goes up in six weeks and everyone is amazed. Nobody is amazed by the piling rig, and the building falls over without it.
Careers in this industry work the same way. The first decade looks slow from the inside and it is not. It is the decade that decides what you can carry later, and almost everything senior people are paid for is something they learned before they were thirty.
Groundworks. Be the person who turns up, does what they said, and says so early when they cannot. Learn who pays whom. Get your card, get on site, and get your hands on a drawing and a programme before anyone asks you to. Reputation compounds from here and it compounds faster than skill.
Substructure. Go deep in one discipline rather than dabbling in four. Start the professional route, RICS, CIOB or ICE, and stop treating it as optional. Take the job that gives you the harder project over the one that gives you the bigger title, because at this stage the project is the education.
Superstructure. You stop being measured on your own work and start being measured on other people's. Own an outcome, lead someone, take a commercial decision and live with it. The network you build now is the one that offers you jobs at thirty five, long before those jobs are advertised.
Everything above is the map. A mentor is the person who has already walked it and can tell you which turnings are worth taking. Apprenticeship or A levels, which discipline, whether the grades you have are enough. Say in your answers that you are at school and which year you are in, and you will be matched with someone used to explaining the industry from scratch.

Two things stand between you and a site gate, and both are straightforward once you know they exist.
Join as a student member early. It is cheap or free, it puts letters after your name eventually, and it is where the chartership clock starts.
