What happened
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch began work on 14 August to establish the cause of a derailment near Lewes the previous afternoon, when a pair of Southern Rail Class 387 electric units came off the track on a routine service from London Victoria to Eastbourne. Three of the rear eight carriages ended up on their side on an embankment, with around 150 passengers and crew on board. Aerial and passenger photographs showed a clearly buckled section of rail at the site.
The derailment happened on the hottest day of the year so far, during the UK's fifth heatwave of 2026, with temperatures reaching 38.1C in the south. Steel rail exposed to direct sun can run some 20C hotter than the surrounding air, and investigators are examining whether that heat effect, combined with soil moisture deficit affecting the embankment and substructure, contributed to the track failure. Within 24 hours a second, unrelated derailment involving a Greater Anglia service occurred at Wickford in Essex, though those carriages stayed upright.

This is a safety investigation, not a construction contract story, but it sits directly on top of one. Network Rail's renewals and maintenance spending has been under sustained pressure for years, and extreme weather is now exposing the gap between the network's condition and the climate it's operating in. Whatever RAIB concludes about this specific incident, the broader pattern, ageing track assets meeting more frequent heat extremes, is not going away, and it puts pressure on the next Control Period settlement to fund resilience work rather than defer it again.
