What happened
Construction News reported this week that Lagan Aviation & Infrastructure has been awarded a £53.3m contract by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation to refurbish the runway, taxiways and aircraft bays at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire. The work started on 25 September and runs to July 2028. It covers RIBA stages five and six under the Ministry of Defence's Airfield Operating Surfaces Programmatic Approach Framework Alliance Contract, and includes new drainage systems and upgraded approach lighting alongside the runway and bay work. Ramboll UK is providing technical services, and Lagan was appointed to the framework alongside VolkerFitzpatrick back in October 2022.
Why it matters
Airfield work is a specialist corner of civils that most contractors never touch, and this contract shows Ministry of Defence infrastructure spend is not slowing even as wider public capital budgets come under pressure elsewhere. RAF Waddington is a live operational base, so the sequencing, night working and safety case around every phase will be as demanding as the engineering itself. A near three-year programme also means the client is planning for workforce continuity rather than a short sharp fix, a sign that other lots on this framework are likely to follow a similar shape over the next few years.
What it means for your career
Defence airfield work carries its own premium: security clearance, usually SC level and sometimes higher, familiarity with DIO standards, and comfort working live operational sites where programme slips are not an option. If you are a civil engineer, section engineer or SHEQ manager with airfield, MoD or aviation-adjacent experience, this is a contract worth putting yourself in front of before it fully mobilises, either directly with Lagan or through the specialist subcontractors it will need for drainage and lighting packages.
For those based in Lincolnshire or the East Midlands, it is also a reminder that defence infrastructure is a steadier regional employer than most people credit, running quietly alongside the housing and commercial cycles that dominate the headlines. Candidates who can show they have delivered inside a live security environment, not just a live traffic one, stand out on this kind of tender.
