Lechley Community

Every project starts with setting out. Then the critical path takes over.

A career works the same way. Two doors into one free community for the people who build UK construction: pick the one that matches where you are.

The certificate

Every pathway ends in a certificate with your name on it.

Four modules, an exam to close each one at 8 out of 10 or better, and a certificate issued in your name, ready to print and put on your profile. Free, like everything else here, and earned rather than given.

I'm not convinced that people know what construction's all about. I spent 36 years in this industry, 12 as a quantity surveyor and 24 helping firms find the people who run it.

And the question I get asked most often is the simplest one, and that is, what is it they actually do? Construction isn't about engineers or site managers. There's plenty of other services involved. Planners, estimators, and health and safety, and then the QSs in the commercial team. There's also HR and legal, marketing and social value. There's hundreds of careers, and most people have never actually heard about them.

So what I've done is put them all in one place so that you can find them. I've called it the Lechley Community, and there are 12 career pathways. There's some questions at the end so you know that you've got it.

You can even ask questions openly, anonymously, or to somebody that's already done the job. They can answer it and give their honest opinion. What we're also trying to do is find mentors, and it's going to be free. And if you're already in the industry and you like to see who's moving where or what's being won, you can also find out what this means for the people and the jobs.

The whole thing is for both ends of the career. It's for the 16 year old that doesn't know where to start and wants a bit more information, and it's also the director with 30 years behind them that wants to put something back into the industry.

It's free to use. It's community.lechley.com. That's Lechley, L-E-C-H-L-E-Y, no T in there. And have a look around and tell me what you think's missing. Really interested in hearing your thoughts, so give us a shout back.

Why this exists

Why we are building this.

UK construction does not have a work problem. It has a people problem. More people leave the industry each year than join it, the ones who stay are getting older, and the pipeline behind them is thin. The work itself is not going anywhere: housing, infrastructure and retrofit are all forecast to grow for the rest of the decade.

Most of what gets someone from a first role to a director's chair has never been written down. It sits in the heads of people who are close to retiring. This site exists to capture it, hand it to the next generation for nothing, and make construction a career more people want to start and fewer want to leave.
